Pakistan summoned India's chargé d'affaires on Saturday over the killing of two Pakistani civilians by Indian border forces, Pakistan's Foreign Ministry said.

The ministry said personnel from India's Border Security Force (BSF) used "unprovoked lethal force" against unarmed civilians in the Bedian sector along the border on Friday.

Two Pakistanis were killed and another wounded in the shooting near the international frontier separating the two countries.

Pakistan's Foreign Ministry said the Indian chargé d'affaires was summoned to lodge Islamabad's "strong protest" over the incident, describing the use of force as "wholly unjustified and grossly disproportionate."

Neither India's External Affairs Ministry nor the BSF immediately responded to requests for comment.

Citing security sources, Pakistan's state broadcaster Radio Pakistan reported that the three men, residents of Kasur in Punjab province, had moved a few steps beyond a border pillar when Indian personnel opened fire without warning.

The sources said the three were unarmed and had not attempted to cross the border fence.

Calling for credible probe

Pakistan called on India to conduct an "immediate, transparent and credible" investigation into the shooting and take disciplinary and legal action against anyone found responsible.

The ministry also asked New Delhi to formally communicate the findings of the investigation and any action taken to the Pakistani government.

Islamabad urged India to "strictly observe relevant bilateral arrangements and established border procedures" and exercise maximum restraint in dealing with incidents along the frontier. It also called for measures to prevent similar incidents from recurring.

Some Indian media reports described the incident as an attempted "infiltration" that had been foiled by border forces.

Pakistan's Foreign Ministry rejected that account, saying it "categorically" opposed any attempt to describe those killed as "infiltrators."

The incident comes amid longstanding tensions between the nuclear-armed neighbours, whose heavily guarded border has witnessed periodic security incidents and exchanges of accusations.
