Magawa detected more than 100 land mines and other explosives and won a medal during his five-year career before retiring last year.
APOPO, an NGO operating in countries where there are landmines left over from previous conflicts, is working on a grand-scale project that will help local communities and wildlife in Zimbabwe, clearing more than seven million square metres of land.
The PDSA award committee was impressed by Magawa's skill of detecting underground mines and felt he deserved a gold medal for his bravery.
