More than 180,000 people have been ordered to evacuate their homes in Sonoma County north of San Francisco because of the wind-fueled "Kincade Fire."
The wind-driven blaze, dubbed the Saddleridge fire, broke out on Thursday night and raced through the area's dry foothills and brush-filled canyons to cover some 3,056 hectares by midday on Saturday.
Authorities issued a "purple" alert -- never used before -- because of the extreme danger, warning that winds could reach 128km/h severely limiting firefighting efforts.
