About 120 agents carried out 24 search and seizure warrants and 11 arrest warrants in several states in bid to dismantle a criminal gang that plotted to carry out deadly attacks against police officials and public servants.
Investigators suspect powerful crime groups, First Capital Command, of involvement in the attacks, local media say, in which gangs have torched vehicles and left police, businesses and government buildings riddled with bullets.
The inmates, both Brazilians and Paraguayans, made their getaway through a tunnel they had built from the prison in the border city of Pedro Juan Caballero.
