Adding to Sulawesi's woes, the Soputan volcano in the north of the island erupted early on Wednesday but there were no reports of any casualties or damage.
Many people reported trapped in the rubble of buildings brought down in the 7.5 magnitude earthquake which struck on Friday and triggered tsunami waves as high as six metres, officials say.
The ferry carrying 139 passengers went down on Tuesday off the Indonesian island of Sulawesi. The passengers trapped on the ferry overnight were rescued but it is unclear if any were still missing.
