Darwin-based monitoring station reports another eruption, three days after eruption of an underwater volcano triggered a tsunami and blanketed the Pacific island with ash.
The quake produced powerful shaking along parts of Japan's eastern coast, and was felt strongly in Tokyo, but triggered no tsunami alert.
Quake strikes west-central San Juan province at a depth of 10 km, says GFZ German Research Center for Geosciences.
The earthquakes rocked Anchorage, Alaska's largest city, causing damage to homes and businesses and triggering a tsunami warning, which was cancelled later on.
No damages or casualties have been reported because the epicentre of the earthquake was far away from the mainland.
Fiji's national disaster office had issued a nationwide tsunami warning after the powerful underwater quake, leading to widespread evacuations and traffic jams.
Several aftershocks have been felt in the region while a tsunami warning has been issued for the coastal areas of Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Indonesia, Nauru and other islands in the vicinity.
