The death toll rose to 42 on Wednesday after another victim was found by search and rescue teams in Sonoma County.

The death toll from Northern California's wildfires rose to 42 on Wednesday, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) said, as rescuers found another victim.

The latest victim was found in Sonoma County, the worst-hit part of California's wine-growing region which has been scorched by multiple infernos raging since October 9. but now largely under control.

Cal Fire says almost 10,000 firefighters are still battling 13 major fires. Over 325 square miles (850 sq km) of land across the state has burned.

"We have stopped the forward progress and movement of all these fires, we have line around them," Brett Gouvea, a California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection deputy chief, said.

"Cooler temperatures and increased humidity overnight have aided firefighters in their efforts. In fact, light rain in northern California is forecast for Thursday night," Cal Fire said in a statement.

Thousands of survivors, forced to flee the flames with little warning, remain displaced. Many are returning to find nothing left, forcing them to seek housing in emergency shelters or with family and friends.
