Yemen’s Houthi group claimed early on Wednesday that it carried out a series of drone and ballistic missile attacks targeting airports and military installations in Saudi Arabia.
In a statement on X, Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree said the forces targeted King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh with several drones, claiming the strike was "precise" and disrupted air traffic there.
He also said Houthi forces conducted two operations targeting Abha International Airport and Khamis Mushait Air Base using a combination of ballistic missiles and drones. He claimed the attacks disrupted air traffic at the airport and caused damage to the military base.
In a separate statement, Saree said Houthi forces targeted three military camps — Dagharir in Jizan, Aakifah in Asir and Al-Mawsim in Jizan — with a large number of ballistic missiles and drones.
Separately, the Saudi-led coalition said on Wednesday that it intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile launched by the Houthis towards the Riyadh area.
Coalition spokesperson Brig Gen Turki al-Maliki said on X that the missile was intercepted north of Riyadh after being launched by the “terrorist Houthi militia.”
Al-Maliki also said that coalition forces had tracked the missile’s launch platform using the coalition’s intelligence systems in the skies over Sanaa, the capital of Yemen.
“We are tracking the launch platform with the Coalition's intelligence system in the skies over Sanaa, and we will destroy it,” he said.
The Houthis have been engaged in renewed fighting with Yemeni government forces since Yemen’s civil war reignited in July, when the group declared a maritime blockade on Riyadh.
Yemen has been engulfed in conflict since Houthis seized the national capital Sanaa and several provinces in 2014.
That prompted a Saudi-led Arab coalition to intervene in 2015 in support of the internationally recognised government.
