After a month in the Syrian capital Damascus, the family paid smugglers to take them over the snow-peaked mountains to Lebanon.

It's a story as horrific as so many from the Syrian war.

A family from the Deir Ezzor region was forced to flee the fighting as Daesh militants pushed into the area.

After a month in the Syrian capital, Damascus, out of desperation they paid smugglers to take them over the snow-peaked mountains to Lebanon.

It was a fateful decision. One that was to have terrible consequences.

TRT World's Francis Collings met the family in the Lebanese city of Tripoli.
