Karate helps to keep children off the streets in Cape Town

South African karate sensei Monwabisi Njomba started a martial arts gym in 2012 in Khayelitsha township which has been a means of keeping kids and adults off the dangerous streets.

Karate is about self-defence and self discipline.

Although it is known for its pristine beaches and tourist hotspots, many residents of South Africa's Cape Town live in impoverished townships on the city's outskirts.

Unemployment is high and many of the city's youth join criminal gangs to survive. But one martial arts expert believes he has found a way to keep young people off the streets.
