Bermuda's world champion Flora Duffy won the women's triathlon to clinch the first gold of the Games. Duffy's gold was the first for her country at the Commonwealth Games since Clarence Saunders won the men's high jump in 1990 in Auckland, where triathlon made its debut as a demonstration sport.

South Africa's Henri Schoeman (C) powered away in the run to upset England's powerhouse Brownlee brothers and win the men's triathlon. Schoeman, who won bronze at the 2016 Rio Olympics, high-fived a team mate running the opposite way, to clinch the sprint-distance event ahead of Australia's Jake Birtwhistle and Scotland's Marc Austin.

India won its first weightlifting World Championships gold medal since 1995 when Mirabai Chanu defeated the Thai favourite Thunya Sukcharoen in the women's 48-kilogram on Wednesday. Chanu, who was a silver medalist at Glasgow in 2014, lifted 26 kilograms more than Mauritian Marie Hanitra Roilya Ranaivosoa, who sealed silver, while Sri Lanka's Dinusha Gomes won the bronze medal.

Malaysia's Muhammad Azroy Hazalwafie Izhar Ahmad won gold in the men's 56-kilogram weightlifting with a total lift of 261 kilograms – a Commonwealth Games record. His 144 in the clean and jerk secured the record and an unbeatable lead, then he celebrated with a dance and a jog around the lifting area with the Malaysian flag.
