The SDF, dominated by YPG terrorist organisation, has announced its dissolution, marking a major step towards restoring the Syrian government’s authority across the country, according to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).

The announcement comes after the PKK terror group formally dissolved itself and ended its decades-long armed campaign, following sustained counter-terrorism operations by the Turkish military that largely dismantled the organisation’s operational capacity and eliminated its ability to operate inside Türkiye.

The decision also follows a March 10 agreement between Syrian President Ahmed al Sharaa and the SDF leadership.

The deal stipulated that all civilian and military institutions controlled by the group in northeastern Syria — including border crossings, airports and oil and gas fields — would be incorporated into Syrian state structures.

The US-backed SDF terror group, dominated by the YPG — the Syrian branch of the PKK terrorist organisation — had previously resisted joining Syria’s unified military structure and faced repeated accusations from Damascus of delaying the agreement’s implementation.

Türkiye has consistently called for all PKK-linked terror groups, including the YPG/SDF, to disarm and dissolve, stressing that Syria’s stability depends on eliminating terrorist structures and preserving the country’s territorial integrity under a single government and national army.
