In Yemen, the Janbiya – a ceremonial dagger – is almost like an identity card.

It can signal a person's social status, tribal affiliation, and even their profession.

Some are more ornate than others – and depending on their origin, can be worth a small fortune.

Brandished mainly during ceremonies, Yemen's Janbiyas are a tradition dating back to pre-Islamic times.
