Pakistan's army launched an operation in mid-2014 to wipe out militant bases in the tribal region that borders Afghanistan and to end the near decade-long insurgency that has cost thousands of lives.

For years, Pakistan's tribal region that borders Afghanistan was a stronghold for local and foreign militant groups. 

The military says it's now regained control of the area, allowing journalists rare access to the region.
